A wire pen in the living room eats floor and draws the eye to the wrong things. We build this crate with paneled sides and a flat wooden top so it serves as a side cabinet beside an armchair or a bed. Four locking casters sit underneath when you need to sweep behind it.
Four wheels let you guide the whole cabinet across the floor to mop underneath, or push it aside when company arrives. Step down on the caster levers to set it firmly in place.
The wide front door lets a dog step inside easily, while a narrower side door manages quick exits. Up top, an opening hatch gives you direct access to set down a bowl or reach in.
The wooden top holds a lamp, a stack of paperbacks or a tray of drinks just like an ordinary living room end table. Put a coaster down under cold glasses to keep the surface dry.
We assemble several sub-frames at the workshop before packing, which leaves you to bolt the main panels and casters together. An adult can complete the build in an evening with the included hex key.
