When a strong dog works on thin wire cages, the crate usually ends up hidden in a back hallway. We build this one with a thick steel frame and black metal doors under a solid top surface, so it holds up in the main room and carries lamps or books on top.
We weld the frame from heavy gauge steel tubing. The bars stay rigid against daily nudges, and the black finish matches dark trim along the living room baseboard.
The front door secures with two separate slide latches. Having one latch near the top and one near the base keeps the steel door flush against the corner post.
Two access doors let you position the crate against an open wall or tuck it beside an armchair. Both openings swing wide for bedding changes and everyday crate training.
The bottom tray pulls straight out when you need to wipe up dirt or hair. Metal casters screw into the base frame so you can roll the assembled steel box for vacuuming.
