When wood is the wrong answer

You already know if this is your dog

The dog that has walked out of a wire crate twice. The one that works a latch with a paw while watching your face. The one whose old crate door hangs at an angle nobody talks about. Those records are the reason this shelf exists.

A wooden crate is furniture that holds a dog. A heavy kennel starts from steel tube instead of panel board, and every other choice on the listing follows from that.

What to read on the listing

Width first, as always. Our heavy kennels run from 33 to 48 inches, and the measuring method from the sizing note applies unchanged.

Then the door hardware. The latches here are steel and stiff on purpose, and the listing photos count them for you. For some dogs a second latch is the difference between a door and a suggestion.

Casters, and the locks on them

Much of this shelf rolls. A kennel on casters mops under itself, follows a sunbeam across the room and moves aside for guests without a second pair of hands.

The rule that matters is short. The caster locks go down before the dog goes in. A heavy kennel is heavier with a dog in it, and a floor is rarely as level as it looks.

The small plate with the name

Several kennels here hang a name tag on the door, and the listings treat it as a small canvas. Chalk for the name, a photo clipped on, stickers if the dog has strong opinions.

It reads as decoration until the third guest asks whose room that is. Put the name in, and the kennel stops being equipment in a corner and starts being an address.
